Frequently asked questions on uniform

If a student wishes to wear a scarf, coat, hat or gloves for the purpose of keeping warm, these are permitted but must be worn over the navy sweatshirt.  All outer garments must be removed in lessons.  There is no longer a restriction on the colour of these items.

Belts must be black and of a plain design.  Belts which make no contribution to the security of trousers or skirts, and are mainly worn as fashion accessories, are not permitted.  Girls may wear a skirt (which must be knee length or below) or plain trousers for normal daily wear.

In Years 7-11 items of jewellery are restricted to a watch and two pairs of plain stud earrings in the ear.   No other items are permitted, the College does not allow facial or tongue piercings. Coloured hair, where the colour is not a normal hair colour, and extreme styles which include shaved patterns including ‘tramlines’ are not permitted. Make up is not permitted.

Combat style wear, pinstriped trousers, sportswear (including trainers) and jeans must not be worn.  The College does not permit the wearing of leggings in place of trousers.

Shoes must be black.  Please note that trainers and trainer styles, boots, sandals, canvas shoes, open-toed or platform shoes and other unsuitable footwear must not be worn.  Should a student need to wear trainers for activities other than PE, a medical note from a doctor is normally required and approval given by a senior member of staff.  Parents are advised to buy sensible shoes for their children, which do not place undue stress on the feet.

Parents are advised, in their own interests, to make sure that all clothing is clearly marked with the student’s name.

In light of the pace at which fashion changes, the College reserves the right to amend the rules concerning the wearing of uniform and hair styles when necessary.

Students whose appearance does not meet the College rules on uniform, will not normally be allowed to attend lessons, and may be isolated from other students, including at break and lunchtimes, or sent home following consultation with parents.

Students who are not wearing the correct uniform should receive a warning in their work organiser.  Tutors will monitor this and notify the appropriate Pastoral Leader for further sanctions, in line with College Policy
