Sawtry Community College
Student Welfare

Sawtry Community College prides itself on its student welfare system.  Even from the first contact with students in Primary schools, as they experience the transition process, the College does everything possible to install a sense security and confidence as they begin secondary education.

In the first few years students not only strive for the goal of academic excellence and optimum effort, but encounter many other hurdles beyond the classroom.  These may include relationship issues, problems outside of school and other unforeseen situations that may occur.  The student welfare system at the college once aware of such potential issues does everything possible to support each and every individual through such times.  This is achieved through contact with parents / carers, liaison with professionals with specialisms in specific areas of child support.  Such work not only addresses the specific problem a student may have, but also makes the student aware of the day to day support mechanisms should they be required after the initial consultation.

As the student goes through the College such issues, plus academic pressures in the form of coursework, modular and final GCSE written examinations may affect the student’s general well being. With the experience we have within College and the excellent support from outside agencies, such cases are dealt with efficiently.

Day to day issues in the form of short term problems such as friendship breakdowns, homework difficulties and other such concerns are often dealt with by the students tutor or subject teacher.  They decide whether such concerns are shared with Welfare Managers and meetings subsequently arranged with parents / carers to support student needs.

A mentor system is also in place at the College involving student and staff mentors for students who need regular support and/or reassurance.
