Dear Parents

Welcome to the PE departments News page. On these pages you will find the latest news on extra-curricular clubs and fixtures.

We are very proud of the students sporting achievements at Sawtry and we encourage as many students as possible to take a full and active part in the clubs we offer.

Please look at the autumn clubs timetable to see what is on offer at the college. All clubs are open to any student regardless of ability or previous experience. After school clubs will begin at 3.30pm and finish at 4.30pm.

Please click here to download the Spring Term PE Clubs timetable

On occasions it is necessary to move clubs to different days in order to accommodate fixtures. Please see the weekly PE notice that will appear below to confirm the arrangements for each week. If you have any questions regarding any aspect of Physical Education at the college please do not hesitate to contact me.

A copy of the fixtures for the year can be found on these pages, however please bear in mind these may change in order to fit in cup fixtures. For an up to date summary of what is happening each week please refer to the weekly bulletin.

Every student at Sawtry has the opportunity to take a full and active part in Extra Curricular PE. In 2011-12 Sawtry achieved some fantastic success on the sports field. Not only did we win a significant amount of trophies last year we also had the highest number of students representing the college as we have ever had. This is a reflection of the hard work of the college staff and the students involved in these teams. For a school of our size to regularly take on and beat schools much bigger and with better facilities than ourselves is something we are rightly proud of. I encourage all students to come along to the clubs on offer and hopefully we will win even more trophies.

All members of the PE department carry a mobile phone to away fixtures to ensure parents can contact us at all times. The number is 07795 476102. This phone is only for away fixtures and will only be turned on when on these fixtures. For all other PE queries please contact the main school office.

I am looking forward to a successfully year on the sports field.

Kind Regards

Mr Paul Baynes

RESULTS:

Girls Basketball Fixtures

On the past two Wednesday evenings a Year 9 and Year 10 Girls basketball team have been taken to St Peters School by Miss Davies to play in a fast and furious competition.   We have always entered on a purely enjoyment / have a go basis as we don’t teach basketball on the girls curriculum.  (We try and squeeze in a few adhoc practices before the event and that’s when Miss Davies teaches them the rules).

Last week, the Year 9 girls did fabulously well and came 3rd in the tournament which was a huge achievement (There were 7 teams in their league).   Last night, the Year 10’s played with huge team spirit but unfortunately collected the wooden spoon.

The girls were an absolute credit to take out and really enjoyed the experience of playing a different team game.

British Basketball Trophy Final on 15th January 2012

On Sunday 15th January PE held a trip to the British Basketball Trophy Final at the NIA in Birmingham.

The students also got to see a women’s basketball game, a slam dunk final (that they got to vote for), some trampoline basketball stunts
and cheerleaders. They were also very lucky that the professional slam dunk finalists sat close to us so they all got autographs of the
giants. The students behaved themselves impeccably and were a credit to the College.

Wednesday 11th January 2012: Year 8 Basketball Tournament

On Wednesday 11th of January 9 Year 8 students participated in a Basketball tournament against St Ivo, St Peters, Hinchinbrooke and Abbey College.
Sawtry A finished 4th in the league after winning some tight games by only one basket.
Sawtry B finished Joint 9th after losing some close games against some very strong schools.
All the pupils who participated were fantastic and were really well behaved.

Tuesday 29th November: English Schools Cup

The Year 8's played a very strong team from Lancaster Sports College from Leicester. The game was 1-1 until the final 10 minutes where Lancaster SC showed some quality from some very talented players and scored a great team goal. Sawtry CC went searching for a equalizer instead conceding two more late goals with Lancaster SC scoring on the break.

The year 8 football team have had a very successful season so far losing only 1 match in 7 played so far.

Thursday 24th November: RAF Rugby Tournament

Year 9 played in the RAF Rugby tournament performing extremely well and showing lots of passion. The lads came through their group beating Kings, Bourne Grammer and Sir Harry Smiths. They then battled very hard against Stanground in the semi-final winning 1 try to 0. In the final we faced a very strong TDA side with many strong rugby players. The lads showed plenty of sprit and determination but unfortunately lost 10-5.

Although disappointed by the defeat in the final they were all very happy with their runner up medals and trophy.

Tuesday 15th November: County Cup

The Year 7 team played St Neots CC in the 2nd round of the county cup. As a squad they work very hard and played well, the final score being 5-2 to Sawtry. The team show some promising talent and hopefully will keep improving. On Monday they play Boston Grammar school in the 4th round of the National cup.

Saturday 19th November 2011: Hunts District Rugby Tournament Year 7

On Saturday the year 7’s participated in the Hunts District Rugby Tournament at Hinchingbrooke School. It was an 8.30am start, I don’t think many of the boys had seen that time on a Saturday morning before, and as a result lost their 1st game to St Ivo by 10pts-0. However, some fantastic rugby saw them beat Hinchingbrooke. This meant a deciding game against Ramsey would determine who qualified to the knock out rounds. However, despite having all the possession and being camped on their try line they couldn’t get the ball over the line. The game ended 0-0 and Ramsey progressed through.

Please congratulate the boys if you see them, they have worked extremely hard this year and come a long way.

Year 7 Football 16th November 2011

On Wednesday afernoon the Year 7 boys football team played St Neots CC in the 2nd round of the County Cup. As a squad they worked very hard and played well, the final score being 5-2 to Sawtry. The team are showing some great talent. On Monday they play Boston Grammar school in the 4th round of the National cup.

Girls Football 9th November 2011

Three girls teams played at Hinchingbrooke tonight and had a thoroughly enjoyable time.  The girls played well and although they tried incredibly hard they came up against some excellent opposition.  The Year 11 girls took 2nd place and both the Year 9 and Year 10 teams took 3rd place.

Year 9 District Rugby Championship

On Saturday morning, 5th November, 22 year 9 pupils competed in the Hunts District Rugby championships held at Sawtry.

We entered two teams which allowed all the pupils more playing time.

All the lads competed very well and worked their socks off in 5 different games against surrounding schools.

Sawtry Blue competed well, however only drew one game in the competition.

Sawtry Yellow won 4 games and drew one, winning the competition on tries scored. They now progress to the cambs district finals rugby tournament in the near future.

Year 9 District Hockey Championships 19 October 2011

Last night we travelled to Ernulf for the Year 9 District Hockey Championship.   Miss Davies was thoroughly delighted that she had 18 girls desperate to play and they certainly did the College proud on a very cold evening.

The Year 9 B team retained their District Champions title having beaten Hinchingbrooke, St Ivo, Ernulf and St Peters.  This was an excellent achievement with a great set of girls who tackled hard.

The Year 9 A team  took the Runners Up title .......we had done all the hard work in the early rounds but in our very last match against Longsands (who eventually came 5th), Longsands scored  with 30 seconds of the match remaining which lost us the Winners title.   The girls played brilliantly well scoring 12 goals and only conceding the dreadful  1.   The team that won the tournament scored 6 in the whole evening.

Never let anyone tell you that it’s only a game!   The girls did brilliantly but Miss Davies was so disappointed that we lost the A team title in the last 30 seconds having played so brilliantly all evening. Congratulations to all the girls involved anyway, we are very proud of you.

Year 11 District Netball Championship

All the year 11 Girls that participated last night, tried very hard. Unfortunately they were unable to bring home any titles – a shame as it is their last year of Netball Tournaments.

The A team came 4th – losing to Hinchingbrooke, St Ivo A and B team. At times they played lovely netball but were unable to maintain this throughout all their games.

The B team came 7th  - this team also had some year 10s playing and they all played very well.

Well done to all the girls involved.

Football Results

The sixth form played very well against Manor Sports College in the 3rd round of the National Cup. The opposition were very organised and skilful however the sixth form worked very hard and battled well unfortunately losing 2-1 in the end. A special well done to Jason Keightly from year 10 who played in goal as Josh Bennis was injured.

The year 8 team played against a County Cup holders Arthur Mellows in the 1st round in the County Cup competition. The lads worked extremely hard and played some excellent football at times winning 3-1. There next game is the week back after half term in the 4th round of the English schools National Cup.

U13 Girls Football 17 October 2011

Nene Park had a wonderful team, (a couple played for Arsenal), and although the score suggests that the game was onesided, we actually played quite well and should have had a few more goals.   The scopre was 8:1. As always the girls were a pleasure to take out and conducted themselves in a delightful manner.

Year 7 District Netball Tournament 12th October 2011

Last night was the Year 7s first Netball tournament and they played some lovely Netball showing lots of potential for future tournaments. The team spirit was fabulous and it was an enjoyable event.
Our A team won 3 games and lost 2, coming 3rd overall.
Our B team won 3 games, lost 3 and drew 1 coming joint 2nd.

They played against Ivo, Ernulf, Hinchingbrooke, St Peters and Longsands.

Well done to the girls and hopefully more successful tournaments ahead!!

Hockey Results:12th October 2011

Last night the girls played amazingly well to bring BOTH Championship titles back to the College.  The A team won every game with some excellent hockey and in their 5 matches scored 16 goals and only conceded 1.  We played against Hinchingbrooke, Longsands, St Peters, Ernulf and St Ivo.

The B team also won their competition which gave us an overwhelming victory on the night.   The commitment the girls have given to Miss Davies in their training sessions has been fabulous and truly paid off.

Rugby Results 29 September 2011

Tonight Sawtry played district rugby fixtures against Ramsey Abbey.

The Year 7s saw a much improved performance on their previous game and were unlucky to not come out with a win, drawing 10-10. There were strong performances from from Josh Gadd, Billy Robinson and Tom Brooks.
The Year 8s ran out comprehensive winners 66-0, with Connor Barton scoring 4 tries. Jack Starkey and Sam Tuckwood also playing well and getting on the score sheet.
The Year 11s won a much closer game winning away to Ramsey 24-21 with David Hughes being given man of the match.

Rugby Results 28 September 2011

The Year10s progressed to the 3rd round of the National U15 Cup with an easy 53-0 victory over St Peters. The game was called off with 10 minutes remaining. It now means we play the might of Oundle Private School in the next round.

Sixth form Football Results 28 September 2011

Tthe sixth form team beat Prince William Oundle 2-0 tonight. The team played very well and showed a good attitude throughout the game.

Sawtry Year 7 Rugby Tournament 21st September 2011

Today saw Sawtry hold the first Year 7 ‘intro to Rugby’ tournament. It was slightly disappointing that a number of local schools did not attend however, it did provide the pupils with much needed game time, and was an opportunity for most to play in their first competitive Rugby Fixtures. All pupils from Sawtry, St Ivo and St Peters participated well and there was some good rugby on show. Sawtry came out about evens after a heavy defeat to a well organised St Ivo team, with a win and a draw against St Peters.

The Yr10 Rugby team kicked off the rugby season in style with a 45-3 win over Kings in the National U15 cup. The boys played really well and it was especially pleasing to limit Kings to 3 points.
