Another District Champions title!
On Wednesday 16th April our Year 7 girls hockey team took part in the District Tournament at St Ivo playing matches against St Peters School, Hinchingbrooke School and Longsands College, resulting in being crowned the Year 7 District Champions. This is a great achievement made even more amazing considering many of our players have only started to play hockey on joining the College in September. Congratulations to all concerned.
In addition to this success, our Year 10 Football team succeeded in making it through to the Southern half of County Cup football final against Chesterton Community College on 16th April 2008. They were narrowly beaten, 1-0, despite dominating the game and were a credit to the College. Congratulations and well done to all involved.

The Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award Presentation Ceremony

On Saturday 5th January the Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire Mr Hugh Duberly presented letters of commendation to 20 young people from Cambridgeshire. The young people had all gained Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Awards during the last twelve months and their achievements were recognised at a presentation hosted by the Lord Lieutenant at Hinchingbrooke School in Huntingdon.
Award achievers, parents, leaders and distinguished guests attended the presentation which was organised by the Cambridgeshire County Council and supported by Cambridge City Council, East Cambridgeshire District Council, South Cambridgeshire District Council and Huntingdon District Council. We are delighted that three participants from the Sawtry Open Award Unit achieved the Gold Standard of the Duke of Edinburgh's award; Gemma Mitchell, Edward Rance and Emily West. Nicola Douglas also achieved the Gold Standard but was unable to attend the presentation.
Guests were treated to speeches from some of the recipients which highlighted some of the activities they had taken part in and these included a trek up Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, a Residential Project to help orphans in India and Edward Rance gave an excellent short presentation on his Exploration on the Isle of Hoy organised by the John Muir Trust that he, Emily West and Stuart Ivatt, (still working on achieving his Gold Award), undertook for their Gold Expedition.
This is the culmination of many years of committed hard work having already achieved the Bronze and Silver Award and they are to be congratulated for their outstanding achievements.

The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal 2007

Sawtry Community College was proud to welcome a past student, Corporal Mark Sutcliffe of the Second Battalion of the Royal Anglian Regiment to the Year 10 assembly on 8th November 2007.
Corporal Sutcliffe lost a leg when a razor sharp rocket propelled grenade hit him whilst he was patrolling the streets of Basra in July 2006.
Corporal Sutcliffe gave a very interesting, informative and personal account as to how the British Legion Poppy Appeal had helped him and how the funds raised help support injured British forces personnel from all conflicts ranging from World War One to those ongoing in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Corporal Sutcliffe has made a remarkable recovery and is due to start work at Birmingham's Selly Oak Hospital liaising with injured services personnel and their families. It is with great pride that the College awarded Corporal Sutcliffe a full school colours tie in recognition of his achievements.
