Religious Education, (R.E.), asks challenging questions about the meaning and purpose of life, beliefs in God, about right and wrong and what it means to be human.
Following on from work in the primary schools RE, taught at Sawtry Community College by Dr David Over, develops students’ knowledge and understanding of Christianity, the other main world religions, religious traditions and other world views which seek to answer these questions. It offers time for thought and discussion.
R.E. encourages students to learn from different religions, beliefs, values and traditions while exploring their own beliefs. It challenges students to consider, analyse, interpret and evaluate issues of truth, belief, value, faith and ethics.
R.E. also encourages students to develop their sense of who they are and belonging. Students will look at modern day issues and concerns which allows them to develop their own views. It helps them to grow as individuals, part of their family and as members within their villages and communities. R.E. has an important role in preparing students for adult life. It enables them to develop respect for and sensitivity towards other people, in particular those whose faiths and cultures are different from their own.

Visit to the Al-Iqra Academy in Peterborough
The school has built strong ties with a local Muslim school, Al Iqra Academy for girls, in Peterborough. In RE we want to introduce students to the world religions that are represented in the local area. To help do this we arranged for a small group of girls from the Al-Iqra Academy to visit us in May. They were shown round the school and hosted by Year 7 girls.
In June 2011 we made a return visit, spending an afternoon at Al-Iqra Academy. We met the head and the girls who had visited Sawtry earlier in the year. After being given a tour of the school, all the girls joined together to carry out RE work.
Some of the Sawtry girls wrote down comments about the day. These included “made a new friend”, “I found the school to be tiny compared to Sawtry” and “Muslim schools have some different subjects’.
A great day was had by all. In the next few months we hope to have more visits and encourage some exchanges of staff members too in order to give both students and pupils alike the opportunity to experience life in a different school.
