The Physical Education Department at Sawtry is staffed by 5 full time and 1 part time specialist trained Physical Education teachers.  In addition to this the department has 1 full time Teaching Assistant and a School Sports Coordinator (2 days per week).

RATIONALE:

In what is a potentially stress-inducing lifestyle in this day and age, we see purposeful and knowledgeable involvement in sport, dance and adventurous activities can provide for socialisation, exercise and a chance to release energy in an alternative setting. We also aim to deliver a high standard of student achievement and understanding right through Key Stage 3 to Advanced Level studies.

PURPOSES :

1.  To deliver the National Curriculum for Physical Education at an appropriate and challenging level for all students.

2.  To provide a range of opportunities for the further study of Physical Education at Key Stage 3 and 4, GCSE Level and A level

3.   To stimulate new interests and widen perspectives. 

4.  To foster an awareness of the health and fitness implications of exercise and provide the skills to achieve and maintain fitness, thus encouraging the adoption of an active and healthy lifestyle.

5.   To develop an awareness of acceptable, social and moral behaviour especially with regard to sporting behaviour, self control, cooperation, dress, safety and respect for facilities and equipment.

6.  To improve coordination and body management together with an aesthetic appreciation of movement to enable expression through non verbal communication.

7.  To develop skills, knowledge and understanding of sports to facilitate an improved personal performance and informed appreciation when spectating. 

8.  To employ teaching methods and resources that allow all pupils to have equal access to Physical Education and to experience success.

9.   To enable pupils to work independently or as part of a team.

10. To include where possible into lessons cross curricular links, literacy, numeracy and the use of ICT with particular links to the Physical Education Website.

11.  To develop skills of planning, performing and evaluating in Physical Education.

12.  To develop personal, learning and thinking skills in Physical Education.

KEY STAGE 3 OUTLINE

Programme of study – Pupils will experience a broad depth of activities that fall within most of the areas of the national curriculum below;

  • Accurate replication of actions, phrases and sequences
  • Exploring and communicating idea, concepts and emotions
  • Performing at maximum levels in relation to speed, height, distance, strength or accuracy

KEY STAGE 4 - OUTLINE

CORE PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Programme of study – Pupils will experience a broad depth of activities that fall within most of the national curriculum areas of activity.

Aims - Physical Education offers opportunities for pupils to:

  • Become skilful and intelligent performers
  • Acquire and develop skills, performing a range of activities
  • Apply skills, tactics and compositional ideas to suit the activity
  • Develop their ideas in a creative way
  • Set targets for themselves and compete against others individually and as part of a team
  • Make informed decisions about the importance of physical exercise in their lives
  • Develop positive attitudes towards physical activity

Timetabled Lessons – Pupils will receive 1 x 60 minute lessons of Physical Education per week.

 

GCSE PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Physical Education is offered at Sawtry at GCSE level. Through this programme, pupils undertake a wide variety of physical activities and theory work following an Edexcel syllabus.

Aims of Edexcel Physical Education

  • Encourage students to be inspired, moved and changed by following a broad, coherent, satisfying and worthwhile course of study and to develop an awareness and appreciation of their own and others’ cultures in relation to physical education
  • Encourage creativity and decision-making skills to enable students to plan effectively for performances and to respond to changing situations
  • Prepare students to make informed decisions about further learning opportunities and career choices
  • Enable students to become increasingly physically competent through being actively engaged in a range of physical activities, and to become increasingly effective in their performance in different types of physical activity and roles such as player/participant, leader and official
  • Enable students to develop their ability to engage independently and successfully in different types of physical activity, and to develop and maintain their involvement in physical activity as part of a healthy, active lifestyle.

Theory– 40% of total GCSE, assessed through a written examination at the end of Year 11.

Practical – 60% of total GCSE

Content for the Practical section is broken into 2 areas:-

1:         Practical assessment at the end of the course:  50%

GCSE in Physical Education students are required to offer four performances, in practical contexts, in the role of either player/ participant, official or leader. At least two of the four performances must be in the role of player/participant.
Performances must be taken from a minimum of two different activity groups.
Pupils will participate in many different activities over the two years.

2:         Analysis of Performance:           10%

Analysis of performance requires all students to undertake an analysis of performance, which is made up of five separate components:

2.2.1: Rules, regulations and terminology
2.2.2: Observe and analyse performance
2.2.3: Evaluate performance
2.2.4: Plan strategies, tactics and practices
2.2.5: Plan a Personal Exercise Programme (PEP).       

The analysis of performance must be based on one of the physical activities undertaken in the role of player/participant.

AS LEVEL PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Aims of AQA AS and A2 Physical Education

  • Become increasingly physically competent
  • Maintain and develop their involvement and effectiveness in physical activity through developing their knowledge and understanding of factors that enable them and others to be physically active as part of a balanced lifestyle, and as part of a lifelong involvement in an active and healthy lifestyle
  • Developing their knowledge and understanding of the relationship between skill, strategy/ composition, and body and mind readiness in ensuring effective and efficient performance in their own and others’ roles such as performer, leader and official
  • Be informed and discerning decision-makers who understand how to be involved in physical activity

Following a AQA syllabus, the Advanced Subsidiary course is broken down into two sections:

Unit 1 PHED1 - Opportunities for and the effects of leading a healthy and active lifestyle – Written paper, 60% of total grade.

Unit 2 PHED2 Analysis and evaluation of physical activity as a performer and/or in an adopted role/s – Practical assessment, 40% of total grade.

  • Application of theoretical knowledge for effective performance

 

A2 PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The A2 units of the course are broken down into two sections:

Unit 3 PHED3 Optimising performance and evaluating contemporary issues within sport

  • Applied physiology to optimise performance
  • Psychological aspects that optimise performance
  • Evaluating contemporary influences

Unit 4 PHED4 Optimising practical performance in a competitive situation

  • The ability to perform and analyse relevant core skills/techniques as a performer, official or leader/coach within a fully competitive situation.
  • The ability to analyse and critically evaluate their own/others’ weaknesses within a fully competitive situation in relation to an elite level performer.
