GP is an AS and A2 options for students in the 6th form

Why study Government and politics?

GP  enables students to understand how the country is run, and the dispersal of power and resources between competing individuals and groups.  The study of the constitution, and the functions of parliament make Government and Politics an ideal A level  option for those considering going on to study law, Politics or international relations.


What can I study with Government and Politics?

It’s  an excellent option for those wishing to combine with other social sciences such as Psychology, as well as being a complementary option to topics such as Economics. The analytical and logical skills developed during  the course may also suit those taking science A levels, as well as providing the opportunity to develop research skills.

What do I study?

During the first year (AS) students study British Politics. Topics covered include the Constitution, Pressure Groups, Electoral Systems, Voting Behaviour, Parliament, Prime Ministerial Power, Cabinet & Civil Service.
At A2, students study US Politics, as well as comparative UK/US Politics. Topics include the US Constitution, Presidential and Mid Term elections, Civil Rights, Congress, Supreme Court.

How do I study?

Lessons will include note making, discussion, analysis of articles and news reports, multiple choice quizzes and short answer tests. Students will also have the opportunity to carry out a power point presentation on a pressure group of their choice. Specialist DVD material is used to aid the understanding of MP ’s and pressure groups.  Assignments are generally based on AQA 5, 10 and 25 mark questions, in order that students acquire the relevant exam skills, and develop essay writing technique.
