Sawtry Community College
Department: Core Studies

Core Studies is made of two main topics Citizenship and PSHE as well as covering Careers and Work Related Learning.
Our Citizenship education is based on the three C’s ‘Co-operation in the community to bring about change’. While studying Citizenship pupils working together on issues of concern.  It gives them the confidence and skills they need to act with others to tackle real problems in society.  They do this by researching and debating complex political, moral and social challenges facing society now and in the future.

PSHE stands for Personal, Social and Health Education. In it students learn about everything school do to promote pupils' good health and well-being. At Sawtry we aim to help equip pupils with the knowledge and skills to mature into responsible young adults. It deals with many real life issues young people face as they grow up. It gives them the knowledge and skills needed to lead healthy and responsible lives as confident individuals and members of society. A major part of the curriculum is delivered during health days where the school invites outside speakers and guests to deliver sessions on a variety of topics.

All students study Core Studies throughout their time at school. At Key Stage 4 students follow the Citizenship Studies GCSE (short course).

In year 10 students participate in an active citizenship project where they plan, deliver and evaluate a project which is either school or community based. These have included looking at Gun/Knife crime and creating a website to raise awareness, raising funds for and cooking for Peterborough Soup Kitchen and making re-usable bags out of donated clothing.
