Sawtry Community College promotes behaviour both inside and outside the classroom.
These guidelines refer to all students in years 7 to 11
Appropriate concessions are made for students in the Sixth Form, however we request that students in the Sixth Form are mindful of the good advice contained within this section and we expect them to be considerate and respectful of their gained privileges.
USE OF THE STUDENT DIARY
- Students should fill in their details, timetable and homework timetable as soon as possible.
- They should have this diary with them at all times. It is essential that they have it with them if they have been released from a lesson for any reason.
- Students should record all homework in the diary carefully. Remembering to note when the work is due in and, on completion, how long it took.
- They should use the diary to record important dates and messages for parents.
- Parents should sign it weekly and write brief notes to teachers in it when appropriate. Similarly, teachers may also write brief notes to parents when appropriate. Students must make sure these notes are drawn to the attention of parents or teachers when they are next seen.
- The tutor will check the diary regularly and sign it weekly.
- Lost diaries will need to be replaced with new ones. Students will be charged for any replacement. The diary is designed to last a full academic year so needs to be looked after carefully.
- Misuse of this diary will be treated very seriously.

USE OF ICT FACILITIES
The college has a strict Code of Conduct for the use of the computer network. Failure to keep within the code can lead to being denied access to the network.
In brief, the key points of this Code of Conduct are as follows:
- Game playing is not allowed.
- The use of the internet is restricted to those areas required by the lesson. Downloading files is not permitted.
- Students should not tamper with any hardware. Any problems should be reported to a teacher.
- Students should not access any area of the network other than their own personal files unless instructed to do so.
- Students must never use any other person’s login code or allow anyone else to use theirs.
- Students must never eat or drink when working on ICT equipment or are in a designated ICT classroom.
It is essential that students always follow all instructions fully when using the college ICT facilities.
Students must leave all computers as they find them, under any circumstances students should not change any settings or configurations (including backgrounds).
For the benefit of students, they must ensure that they keep the login number and the password which they are given confidential and that they take reasonable precautions to protect the work they have completed and saved to the network. If a student is worried that someone else may know their password, they must talk to a teacher immediately to have it changed.
Students are also strongly advised to make backup copies of important files on a regular basis in order to protect against loss or other problems.
The college is fully aware of the problems caused by inappropriate use of popular social network sites and take very seriously any reports of students being picked on or bullied via this medium.
AEROSOL SPRAYS
Due to the serious consequences for severe asthma sufferers related to the use of aerosol sprays in their presence, students are not allowed to bring aerosol sprays of any type on to site. Roll on alternatives are acceptable. The use of aerosol sprays on the site is a serious disciplinary matter.
SUBSTANCE ABUSE
The use of tobacco, alcohol or any other illegal substance is prohibited anywhere on the college site at any time. In line with recent government regulations, the governing body have declared the whole site smoke free as of 1 July 2007. Non compliance will be a serious disciplinary matter within the college. Smoking within any building could also lead to criminal proceedings.
MOBILE PHONES
In line with a large number of other schools, mobile telephones are not allowed in the College. A student who needs to contact home for any reason may use a pay phone in the library (at an appropriate break) or go to the pastoral office for permission to use the college phone system. There are a variety of reasons for this, including:
- They are valuable and easy to steal
- Loss of phones causes distress, wastes staff and student time and they are rarely found or handed in.
- They are a nuisance and can cause distraction and disruption to student learning during lessons
- They are used to organise, and prevent detection of, activities which are not in the students best interests, including bullying and intimidation
Mobile phones which are seen or heard in the college will be confiscated and will only be returned at the end of a college day after the parent has been informed – not on the day of confiscation. In cases of persistent infringement, the parent will be asked to come in to college to collect the phone by prior arrangement.
ITEMS OF VALUE
Mobile phones, cameras, laptops, games consoles and other valuable items are not covered by the College insurance policy. If brought on site they are at risk of theft, loss or damage, therefore the College requests that they are left at home.
